Photographing Subjects in Motion

The essential camera setting?
• Shutter speed
• Reciprocity - When the shutter speed is adjusted, the aperture must also be adjusted to maintain proper exposure.
• Fast shutter speed to stop or “freeze” the action
• Slow shutter speed to illustrate “motion”

“Freezing” the motion…
• Consider the direction of the motion
• Subjects moving toward the camera or away from the camera do not require as fast a shutter speed as subjects moving past the camera.
• The choice of shutter speed is dependant upon the speed of the moving subject
• Use your camera’s flash
• Anticipate the action

Illustrating “motion”…
• Allow the moving subject to blur
• Blur the background while keeping the subject sharp
• Use a slow shutter speed (1/4 – 1/10 sec.)
• Pan the camera with the subject as you shoot
• Keep the camera still and allow subject to move in the frame
